James Brown was no Teddy Bear
It might be lazy, it might be rehashing, but as any major fan would do when he finds gems and tidbits of his objets d’amour and their work online I became overcome with an urge to share it. Spread the love, so to speak. Now, I could write nothing less than an essay around these two videos, but I won’t because, to be frank, it’s sunday and there are other things in need of my participation.
However, I will share some anecdotical information. The first video, It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World is indeed a James Brown cover as it was performed at The Residents Icky Flix tour, sung by Molly Harvey (in a killer wig). On the screen that is visible on the stage the original video of The Residents original cover is shown. The Residents original cover of the song, not sung by Molly Harvey, was made available as white-colored vinylsingle in 1984, commonly refered to as “The White Single”.
The second video is from the 14th january 1990 and the NBC show Night Music where The Residents performed to songs from their concept tour Cube-E The History of American Music in 3 E-Z Pieces, namely From The Plains to Mexico and Teddy Bear of which the latter is performed in the video. That rendition of the Elvis Presley song stirred up strong emotions among viewers, and especially the Elvisfans among the viewers. But it is a work of love from The Residents just as the cover in the first video. No defaming was intended, it is just their interpretation.
With that, and no further ado, I present to you (with the aid of Youtube) The Residents performing It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World and Teddy Bear. Enjoy!
